Fannish Friday 5 Resurrection Meme

Spoilers for all seasons of the five shows mentioned in the tags.

"Name five characters you would resurrect from the dead."

I thought I would limit it to one per fandom.

In the order I thought of them:

1. Ben, from Dark Angel. Alec McDowell should have had to deal with his evil twin in person. And I had some wild hope for him.

2. Anastasia Dualla, from Battlestar Galactica. Her absence was like a wound in the last episodes. That's not a diss on them, I just really felt it.

3. Talia Winters, from Babylon 5. I hate the Corps and the Shadows so much for this. Someone should have fried Control and restored Talia to her rightful place. Even if it was in a novel.

4. Jo Harvelle, from Supernatural. I am no longer fannish about the show because of her death. And the underwhelming The Real Ghostbusters, but then Abandon All Hope cinched it. Bobby and Ellen dying would make dramatic sense. Jo and Ellen, no.

5. Cordelia Chase, from Angel. Rather, I'd have had her wake up and kill Jasmine as originally planned.

I dreamt that Twilight, the Buffy Season Eight Big Bad, was actually a semi-amnesiac Anya. Which I thought was a terrible idea. The funny thing is that I'm not one of the people who have been obsessing over Twilight's identity, but I read a thread on the topic before I went to bed.

We all know that TV Tropes is good for hilarious insights, but apparently it's also good for reminding me of old movies I watched when I was a kid, especially ones with musical themes that stick in your head, like "Face to the Wind", which plays when Princess Oriana is dancing in the Felix the Cat Movie. Dream Diary 10/22/09

Had two strange dreams last night. First a short one in which I was reading online reviews that said the movie Stardust (which I and my parents re-watched on Sunday) hadn't done well in the box office, which I knew couldn't be right.

I woke up during a dream in which I was playing The Sims 3 on a supercomputer. I got bored and had my avatar try to convince the other Sims that they were Sims. I told the computer to change the settings to prove it to them, but it kept arguing with me because the scientist who made it hadn't told it to that. I threatened to delete all its file folders, but it knew I was bluffing.

Firefly: The Complete Series has arrived, along with the soundtracks for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. I hope Firefly lives up to expectations. I'm going to wait to see it until there's a discount to purchase the movie Serenity, though. Then I can view it all in one run.

I'm enjoying reading the Babylon 5 novel, To Dream In the City of Sorrows, which arrived yesterday. I finished re-reading The Golden Compass recently and started re-reading The Subtle Knife. My parents and I watched the DVD of The Golden Compass yesterday, which was the first time my father had seen the movie. My parents still need to read the His Dark Materials trilogy. My mother and I are starting a re-watch of Neverwhere today.

Excited for Dollhouse tomorrow! Battlestar Galactica: The Plan and Doctor Who: The Next Doctor will be arriving next week!

I had thought that the Resurrection Hub in Battlestar Galactica was a bit contrived. But I just remembered that in "Resurrection Ship", the episode, Baltar said that the Resurrection Ship was built for the purpose of extending the range of the normal downloading process. So, even at the beginning, there was the idea of a Resurrection Central that the rez ships are nothing but boosters for. They were just using established canon.

Sidenote: The Final Five comic issue #3 actually has Tyrol use the abbreviation "Rez Hub". Too bad it's not canon.

Thoughts on Stargate Universe Premiere

The introductory view of the Destiny was awesome-looking and the end of the episode was when things finally got attention-drawing. Exploring unknown planets is what's interesting and invoked that sense of wonder. Found the rest of it to be not terribly exciting. Would group it with Sanctuary and Warehouse 13 as a show that's not bad but lacks a certain je ne sais quoi.

The only part that actively irritated me was that Lt. James seemingly existed only as a device to say that Lt. Scott is not a virgin (and we care about this fact why?). Much like the woman Pete slept with in the premiere of Warehouse 13 (did they give her name? I've searched). Given that she's one of a limited population of crewmembers, hopefully they will have to give her a personality and a role in the plot.

I've seen people say that Rush reminded them of Baltar, but I think they're completely different. Baltar had more charisma and deceived people to cover his own skin. Rush is driven to unlock scientific mysteries at any price.

I recorded Dollhouse tonight because of the temporal conflict. I don't plan on recording all the time, so from now on I will be watching Dollhouse and not Stargate Universe. No contest. But I am still interested enough to keep track of ongoing plot developments via Stargate Wiki.

Question: If the video game was designed by people who didn't know what the solution was, how can it recognize the solution? I'm not one of those people who automatically assumes Plot Hole, I just don't know the answer. Do you think it just sent his answer to people who reviewed it and went Eureka? But then why the ultra-fast "begin level over" reaction that he hadn't gotten with incorrect formulae? Unless it was the same reaction as with incorrect formulae and I missed that.

Just came back from seeing the movie 9 with my mother. Good stuff. Great visuals, interesting characters and story. It's foggy what the scientist's master plan with the talisman and the BRAIN was, but not too foggy for my brain to fill in the gaps, and it doesn't detract enough from the rest of the movie.

Only one female ragdoll, but she's the only warrior and voiced by Sarah from Labyrinth, so.

Carmen from Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead set a bunch of grey terrier dogs, tabby cats, and pidgeons on Eve and Lindsey from Angel while Alec from Dark Angel watched stupefied and the Series 4 "Doctor's Theme" played. Then I woke up and was disappointed that it hadn't been a real episode, but resolved to write it into my plot bunnies. Then I woke up again, this time for real.

Had several unrelated dreams of little coherence last night. Some were BSG and had the characters in the wrong places because it was supposed to be different characters in those scenes. For example, Tory when it was supposed to be Boomer. My brain's explanation for this: It's an episode where the characters are having a dream sequence.

Dreams I can remember:

*Tory/Boomer with Cavil. For some reason the Eights were with Cavil whereas the Sixes were correctly with Galactica. Something was going on about human families, including children, being processed and killed. Eights were cooing over the fact that there were children around. It was supposed to be Cavil's fleet but it was a lot like New Caprica. In appearance, it was like a hotel designed by MC Escher. Cavil studying All Along the Watchtower (except it was actually random paragraphs of words and not AATW, but I thought it was AATW and I got the tune right at least) to uncover the Final Five's master plan. Plan was put into motion. New Caprica-esque explosions.

*Draco Malfoy in Ravenclaw AU. I thought this was a fanfic I was creating, even though I was seeing it play out before me in the dream. I argued with myself about what kind of changes to canon plot development make sense. I planned to do Sirius Black in Slytherin next.

*Myself skimming through episodes of that old show Max Steel online. The dream videos, of course, bore little resemblance to the show in reality. They were very short and all the action happened either at the end or the beginning of each one. This annoyed me.

Just finished my Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 rewatch by watching Daybreak (the unaired extended episode) on DVD tonight. It's absolutely perfect. Eclipses the first time I saw it, and not because of the extra scenes.

Dream Diary 8/13/09

I've decided to keep a record of interesting dreams. Last night I was with the Fourth Doctor and there was a big fuss going on over the relocation of the Sisterhood of Karn to another planet along with their sacred flame due to Karn becoming geologically unstable. Fortunately, Maren had learned by this time to listen to the Doctor instead of sacrificing him, but we had to get past officious types to see her. The Sisterhood's ranks had expanded, and there was a mad alchemist in their midst with plans to replicate the sacred fire. I convinced the Doctor to go tell Maren right away instead of standing there watching him fiddling with the fire so that we would look like his accomplices if someone barged in.

And yes, I know Maren died, but in my dream, she hadn't.

I just learned on Battlestar Wiki that the Number Six copy Natalie's full name was Natalie Faust. She was called that in production scripts and there's a "Natalie Faust's Bloodied Watch" prop on ebay. Huh.

I watched the whole series of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere on Youtube today. I highly recommend it. I finished the book yesterday.
